Region South-West Oltenia

The Sud-Vest Oltenia region, located in the southwestern part of the country, is a territory with a strong historical identity centered around the city of Craiova. The area combines the agricultural plains of the south with the mountain ranges in the north, home to Gorj county, known for its coal mining tradition and as the birthplace of the great sculptor Constantin Brâncuși. The landscape is further defined by the Danube gorge in Mehedinți, known as the Iron Gates, and the thermal spas in Vâlcea, such as Băile Olănești and Călimănești. This region maintains a distinct Oltenian culture, with an economy where agriculture, traditional industry, and the tourism potential of its landscapes and hot springs play a key role.
